Twitter seeks money maker while companies cash in

Money, though there’s considerably less of it about these days, continues to make the digital world turn. The question for Twitter, it seems, is how to get hold of it.

With over 6 million users world-wide, the microblogging service has undoubtedly taken social media to new levels. But cashflow problems previously led to Twitter’s abandonment of an SMS service and generated questions in the tech community about their shaky business model.

It looked absolutely certain that the dollarflow would commence after the service shook up traditional news reporting with instantaneous accounts of the Mumbai bombings. Instead its founders have concentrated on creating the kind of service which would merit millions of users.

Meanwhile, British social media agency Ryan MacMillan is calling for companies to appeal to a sitting duck userbase. Many already have, using Twitter as a free, useful marketing tool while its founders watched the big money sail by.

Last year Twitter CEO Evan Williams hinted in an interview with TechCrunch that Twitter was very much interested in tapping into this cashflow:

…maybe we just say, this is commercial usage and you need to pay for that and maybe there’s some features you get on top of that, that wouldn’t be as meaningful to personal users.

But how to do it? We’re about to find out as Twitter has advertised for a business project manager to:

lead the definition and execution of the products and features that will lead to monetization of the Twitter platform.

Quite an ask, then. As the ad goes on to say, the new addition would be fundamental in deciding Twitter’s commercial direction.

Incidentally, necessary qualifications aside from an excellent grasp of web software and online advertising include:

Active Twitter user.
